For nut trees black walnut, heartnut, and buartnut are good. Butternut suffers from canker in the Northeast. I bet Currants and gooseberries could potentially do okay.

From a standard size cutting, I can usually do two whip and tongue, plus a chip bud. Whip and tongue has almost a success rate, whereas with chip bud it's maybe 50%.
